MJ Film Festival – A Resounding Success!

The last day in February saw several hundred enthusiastic fans step inside Moose Jaw’s Mae Wilson theatre to watch films of all genres. Billed as the first Moose Jaw Film Festival showcasing only Saskatchewan films produced in the last 2 years, the event was a resounding success!

With over 100 entries, the jury had a challenging task to select the films to be nominated, screened, and winners chosen. “Golden Moose Awards” were presented in 18 different categories at the evening awards ceremonies. Golden Moose Trophy was made by Schneider Graphic Design

Dylan Hryciuk was the big winner of the night! He picked up the Best Music Video for “Calling All Captains: A New Type of Grey.” Dylan’s film “Our Last Day As Kids” collected awards for Best Directed Short Film, Best Scripted Short Film, and Best Female Performance for the incomparable Maggie Nicole Robertson.

Our Last Day as Kids” also received Screen Sask’s sponsored “Best of Festival” Golden Moose which was presented by Hannah Hermanson, VP.

Doug Lucuik’s “Welcome to Kittytown” picked up Best Feature, which also received Best Writer award!

Four Jury Prizes were handed out: “First Laid  Eyes,” “Tuesday,” “We Were Broncos,” and “Fossil Records!

Kudos to the festival organizers, Jeremy Ratzlaff, Timothy Lemko, Nick Lamb and Karla Weber, who in only a few months, pulled off an event that not only encouraged the filmmakers of the province, but provided a window to showcase our productions to the rest of the province.

Saskatchewan’s film community is bursting with creatives who understand dedicated teamwork and who are determined to produce first-class media. This is our testimony that as an industry, “we’re in good shape.”
