CMPA Poll Supports Online Streaming Act

A recent survey conducted by Pollara Strategic Insights on behalf of the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) finds Canadians overwhelmingly support the Online Streaming Act. The research stats revealed that 83 per cent of Canadians support the Online Streaming Act (OSA), demonstrating strong cross-partisan and regional consensus for the legislation. ​

Strong Support Across the Board

94% of Liberal voters support the OSA
90% of undecided voters support the OSA
85% of NDP voters support the OSA
65% of Conservative voters support the OSA

· 88% of Canadians in Quebec support the OSA

· 84% of Canadians in Ontario support the OSA

· 81% of Canadians in British Columbia support the OSA

· 79% of Canadians in the Atlantic provinces support the OSA

· 77% of Canadians in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba support the OSA

On Digital Sovereignty and Trade

73% believe the federal government should stand firm on cultural policies and digital sovereignty, even if it complicates trade negotiations with the US.
73% agree Canada has the right to set rules for digital platforms operating within its borders, even if headquartered abroad
74% of Canadians are concerned about foreign technology companies having significant control over online content

The OSA, passed in 2023, requires foreign streaming companies like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ to invest a portion of their Canadian revenues into the production of Canadian shows and movies, similar to the obligations of traditional domestic broadcasters. ​
