CRTC’s new CPE Rules

CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) has issued a media release to announce their new rules to “implement the modernized Broadcasting Act by updating how Canadian and Indigenous content is supported and made available.”

A chart overview of the modernized CPE framework Contribution requirements for traditional broadcasters, which currently pay between 30 and 45 per cent, will be lowered to 25 per cent. Large TV streaming services like Netflix must contribute 15 per cent of their Canadian revenues to Canadian content, up from 5%.

Reaction from the film industry has been swift – with some applauding CRTC’s new rules to increase support for Canadian content while others claiming this action will actually elevate Canada-US Trade barriers.
