The basis of a good production is established by great writers! The old cliché, “It all begins with the story” is true for drama, comedy, documentary or reality, be it in long-form, shorts, vignettes or virtuals! Memorable characters, whether they be fictional like the Huntrix group in KPop Demon Hunters, individuals like Indiana Jones or Blondie, or based on true lives, ie., Howard Hughes and Freddie Mercury, are essential elements for a great film.
Locations can be characters: The Grand Budapest Hotel, Gotham City in Batman, Bruges, San Andreas, were all leading characters in their respective movies. Seasons, scenery and weather can be characters: consider wintery snow-white conditions that made Fargo stand out, Twister and Groundhog movies. Documentary films are often created from stories woven around nature, people, places and things.
The Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) has announced the nominations for the 30th annual WGC Screenwriting Awards, marking three decades of recognizing the writers behind Canada’s most engaging and powerful series, films, and shorts. Sweeping their categories with 5 nominations each is North of North for comedy and Bet in Tweens and Teens.
Congratulations to all the nominees for their creation of remarkable characters with catchy dialogues to showcase the uniqueness of Canada and our culture.
The Awards will take place at Koerner Hall in Toronto on Monday, April 27, 2026.
