CBC Creates Two New Documentary Funds

CBC Announces Two New Documentary Funds and Additional Support for Filmmakers at all Career Stages

– The CBC Creator Catalyst Fund will support new projects from emerging producers.
– New CBC Co-Production Fund will support ambitious and strategic international co-productions.
– CBC’s new documentary FAST channel will launch September 1 on CBC Gem and the CBC Docs YouTube channel.

Today at the Banff World Media Festival, CBC, Canada’s largest commissioner of documentaries, announced more details about its $7 million increased investment in documentary storytelling. In addition to supporting more feature-length documentaries, CBC will create two new documentary funds and boost the Absolutely Canadian documentary strand. The funds will offer new opportunities for emerging creators to work with CBC and deepen CBC’s partnership with mid-career and established documentary storytellers, across all regions of Canada.

CBC Creator Catalyst Fund *New*
The CBC Creator Catalyst Fund will support new projects from emerging CBC Creator Network producers across Canada. The fund aims to advance their career development and create a path for them to continue working with CBC, allowing for future growth and collaboration.

CBC Co-Production Fund *New*
The CBC Co-Production Fund is a dedicated allocation for The Passionate Eye and feature documentaries to support established filmmakers in international co-productions, reinforcing CBC’s commitment to ambitious and strategic partnerships.

CBC Local Production Development Fund *Increased Support*
Additional investment in the CBC Local Production Development Fund will expand the creation of projects in regions across the country for the ongoing Absolutely Canadian documentary strand. Building on the series’ focus on diverse local stories, this new investment will support new voices and mid-career filmmakers in bringing their unique perspectives to screens from coast to coast to coast.

CBC’s new free ad-supported streaming (FAST) channel dedicated to documentary programming, CBC Docs, will launch Tuesday, September 1 on CBC Gem and the CBC Docs YouTube channel. The new FAST channel will expand audiences for CBC’s extensive documentary slate by offering free 24/7 access.

More details on the funds will be available this fall on the CBC Independent Producers site.
